ToggleIf you’re new to wrestling, gearing up properly is one of the best ways to stay safe, perform better, and feel confident on the mat. Whether you’re joining your first practice or prepping for a tournament, here’s a quick guide to the essential gear every beginner needs.
Unlike regular sneakers, Wrestling shoes are lightweight, flexible, and provide excellent grip on the mat. A snug fit helps with speed and control, while high-top designs protect your ankles. Wrestling shoes are the most important when it comes to wrestling equipment so make sure to get a good one.
A singlet is a tight-fitting, one-piece uniform worn in Wrestling matches. It allows maximum movement and keeps you from getting caught in your opponent’s grip. Also, some gyms allow compression shirts and shorts during practice if you’re not competing yet.
Also called “ear guards,” headgear protects your ears from friction and injury (like cauliflower ear). It’s especially important during intense Wrestling and live sparring. Take note that most organizations and tournaments don’t allow Head-gears so make sure to check.
A simple mouth-guard can prevent tooth injuries and reduce the risk of concussions. Some gyms require them especially for kids and teens.
